Our Story

“There had to be a better way.”
The idea for Shutdown Partners didn’t start in a boardroom, it started in a progress meeting at a mining concentrator in 2015.

I was sitting there listening to the reports: Task 5 – 100%. Task 6 – 80%. Task 7 – 90%. On paper, the shutdown looked perfect. The numbers were nice and round, the supervisors were confident, and the schedule was on track.

But when I walked the plant floor after the meeting, the reality was different. Tasks reported as “nearly finished” had barely started. The “90% complete” status was just a guess, and the critical path was already slipping.

Evolution of the Idea

That moment in 2015 planted the idea. As I continued managing shutdowns, the problem became clearer: progress tracking was only one piece of the puzzle.

Mining teams needed a complete approach.

Over the next several years, I refined and tested a full shutdown methodology that covered every phase of an STO event:

Strategy & scope selection – defining the real shutdown drivers
Planning & preparation – making sure work, materials and people are truly ready
Execution control – real-time visibility into actual progress, not guesses
Post-shutdown reporting – capturing lessons and cost drivers
Continuous improvement – turning every shutdown into a better shutdown

The more the methodology grew, the more obvious it became that shutdown teams needed a tool built specifically for mining. Not generic enterprise software. Not spreadsheets. Something practical, fast, and aligned with how shutdowns really run.

Turning Experience Into a Platform

In 2021, we formalized the concept and started building Sights. It wasn’t a quick project. It took countless iterations, clarifying discussions, and field tests to make sure the software matched the realities of mine sites, not the assumptions of a software office. Today, Sights supports the entire shutdown lifecycle, from strategy through continuous improvement. It gives managers, superintendents, supervisors and GMs the same level of visibility and control you’d expect from an enterprise system, without the enterprise overhead.
